Dr James Orford
Dr Orford is a Gynaecologist on the Sunshine Coast who strives to give the best care in laparoscopic surgery.
He studied Medicine at the University of Queensland, and obtained his primary medical degree in 1990. Having served his internship in 1991, he did a year of country service in 1992. Two years of rotations through medicine, O&G, and ICU/anaesthetics was followed by the 6 year training program for O&G. Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists was awarded in January 2001. Dr Orford has been in private and public practice on the Sunshine Coast since January 2001.
Along with his dedication to pregnancy care, he has maintained a busy practice in Gynaecology, with a strong interest in laparoscopic surgery. During his last year of specialist training, in 2000, James specifically sought out extra training from some of Queensland's most experienced laparoscopic surgeons, as well as general surgical and urological experience to extend his surgical skills.
Through his specialist fellowship training, and through years of private and public hospital practice, Dr Orford has continued developing his laparoscopic skills and range of procedures and has now performed thousands of gynaecological procedures.
Throughout his years in specialist practice he has been keen to assist in teaching these techniques to the next generation of training specialists / registrars and they regularly attend his operating sessions to assist Dr Orford and gain experience they find hard to get elsewhere. He attends operating sessions in the public hospital system to teach senior trainees these skills.
Dr Orford is also involved in training specialist colleagues. He regularly holds laparoscopic hysterectomy workshops for specialist gyaecologists, where 1-2 specialists attend to observe the technique and skills involved in this advanced laparoscopic procedure. He has hosted attendees from:
- Bundaberg / Hervey Bay
- New Zealand
He founded SALS in 2005, to reflect his area of interest. The vision of SALS was to become a growing practice, providing excellent care to patients through:
- careful assessment of symptoms
- appropriate investigations
- communicating options of care (surgical and otherwise)
- giving realistic expectations of care, and if surgery becomes indicated -
- performing any surgical treatment expertly.
The second goal for SALS is to assist in passing these skills and techniques to the next generation of specialists. As Dr Orford operates on all his private patients personally, teaching involves trainees and colleagues attending, observing and assisting. Dr Orford also attends the public hospital to supervise / teach these procedures to senior trainees.
